Help Me Go To Prom

Guys, can you believe it’s the last year in high school for me? I still have trouble believing that three years have already passed by. Since it’s my senior year, I obviously will be going to Prom. With a date or not, I am determined to have fun :P The problem is I haven’t been able to find a dress within my price range that I like. I want something long, mermaid and possibly red. It’s so hard to find a perfect red dress.

The reason I’m sharing with you guys about this is because I entered this contest on Makeupbee to recreate a look base on a prom dress. The winner gets to receive $500.00 Camille La Vie Gift Card which is an online dress store that sells amazing prom dresses. I know there are so many talented makeup artists out there that I practically don’t stand a chance but it really would mean the world to me if you take a second to vote for me HERE. I’m pretty all you need is a facebook account and just luv my picture. Please help me out guys.

Here’s a picture of the prom dress I chose to recreate and since its main colorsare pink, blue and purple, I used these three colors to create a romantic eye makeup. Please vote for me ;)

Ulta Haul: Real Techniques Brushes and EOS Lipbalms

I’ve heard numerous ravings about the Real Techniques makeup brushes and trust me, I’ve tried as many ways as I can to get my hands on them without much success. And guess what, I finally got them!! I had a friend who went over to the States during the March Break, and as soon as I heard that she was going, I asked her to get the brushes for me. Here they are!

I believe the most famous brush out of all the RT brushes is the buffing brush. So the first thing I asked her to get me was the Core Collection. Sorry if it’s a little bit dirty cuz of course, I had to try them out as soon as I got it. It’s phenomenal! It blends your foundation like a dream and it’s so soft.

I love those brushes for multiple reasons. First, it’s really quite affordable. The whole collection comes with four brushes: buffing brush, contour brush, detailer brush and pointed foundation brush. It also comes with a case and stand 2-in-1 which I think it’s so smart. The whole set is only $17.99. I would pay that much money just for the buffing brush alone. Also, the brushes are so adorable. Yeah, the MAC brushes are classic but they’re so boring. The black handles do nothing to my cute makeup counter. Those brushes, on the other hand, add such a nice pop of color! The yellow is so unexpected yet chic! They don’t look cheap at all. And of course, the brushes are extremely well-made and I love Samantha from pixiwoo on YouTube. I’d love to support her for all the amazing work she does.

Next, I got the Your Eyes Enhanced Starter Kit. Initially I saw on the Ulta website that they had a buy one get one half off sale on all the RT brushes and that was why I wanted the set. However, I ended up paying for the full price but that’s OK! The brushes are again very well-made and they’re in this nice purple color. The set includes: base shadow brush, deluxe crease brush, accent brush, pixel-point eyeliner brush and a brow brush. Again, it comes with a case and stand 2-in-1. The price of this set is also $17.99. I haven’t tried any of the brushes but I’ve always seen Sam using the deluxe crease brush to blend her under eye concealer and her makeup always looks flawless. I can’t wait to try those brushes out.

Who isn’t obsessed with EOS lip balms? I know I totally am. I was devastated when I missed the change to get the Alice in Wonderland Collection and now my friend was going to the States, I asked her to get me the passion fruit one.

This one I believe only comes in a set with the strawberry sorbet and it’s in such a lovely lavender color. It smells amazing too. I can’t quite place what it smells like since I have no idea what passion fruits are but it smells amazing as always.
I literally shrieked when my friend sent me a photo to tell me she got all the products I asked for. I was beyond thankful and happy for all of those and I hope you all have a wonderful day :)

DIY: Galaxy Shirt

close up of my galaxy shirt
Galaxy, galaxy, galaxy, why art thou so beautiful? I’ve made a galaxy print nail DIY before (HERE), here I have a DIY galaxy shirt. Are you excited for it? I know I was thrilled when I decided to make a galaxy print shirt myself. Galaxy print clothes have been around for ages and I’ve always wanted them. But the price keeps putting me off and knowing that it wouldn’t be too hard to DIY it, why pay the high price? Trust me, it’s really not that hard to make one yourself. Let me show you how I did mine :)

All you need is a simple black T, or any dark colored clothing item that you want to DIY. Of course, you’ll need some paint. I had some old bright blue acrylic paint laying around and I went ahead to Dollar Store and purchased a bottle of purple paint. I also had tons of black and white paint left from my DIY Striped Jeans (HERE), so I made use of them as well. Have some sponges and brushes ready to create your masterpiece. Lastly, grab some multicolored glitter from your local dollar store. I used silver and purple. Now we’re all ready!

Tip no.1, always have a picture of galaxy ready in front of you. I just googled one and used it as an example. You don’t have to make your print exactly like the photo, but it’s always helpful to have one example there so you have the general idea. Of course, you can always create your own design. It’s completely up to you.

Then, just grab your sponge and dip into purple paint and sponge it on. I like to use purple as a base and later on I would blend in white and blue so it has the blurred effect.

Tip no.2 Put some sort of card board inside of your shirt so the paint wouldn’t soak through it. You’ll probably need more than one coat of paint since lighter colors don’t show up very well on black shirt.

Just get creative and follow your example picture as a guide to create your own galaxy design. The thing I love about galaxy print is that it’s so forgiving. There’s no particular shape or color to it, the messier, the prettier.

Once you get the base color done and if you’re quite happy with your design, just add some finishing touches. I used a skinny brush to paint on some stars and randomly splattered some white paint over the shirt so it looks like clusters of stars. Those finishing touches really bring the whole look together. Lastly, sprinkle some glitter over the stars or wherever you feel like it.

I cut of the sleeves to give the shirt a more street-style vibe :P

more close up
By now, I’m sure you’re already happy with your design. Wait a couple of days for it to dry and wear it out proudly. When someone asks you where you get the shirt and I assure you someone will ask, tell them proudly that you make it! I’m sure they’ll be in awe of your talent when in fact, it was such a simple and fun process.
Get creative and have fun!

Review: Simple Skincare Products- makeup remover, wipes & face wash

Hi dolls :) I know I haven’t been writing blogs as consistently as before and I apologize for that. I have been quite busy visiting campus, running conference and volunteering. For me, March Break has officially started and I hope to write as many blogs as I can to make up for it.

I’m not sure if you are familiar with the brand Simple. It’s basically a skin care brand founded in UK and they make skincare products for sensitive skin. Their products claim to be perfume-free, dye-free, and many other harsh irritants-free. They recently launched their products here in Canada and I got to try out three of their products and I would like to share with you all what I think of them.

First off, I have this eye make-up remover. It says on the bottle that it doesn’t contain oil, perfume, dyes and it has vital vitamin in it. It even claims that it removes waterproof makeup. I love the concept behind it. It reminds me of Bioderma’s famous eye make-up remover water. I don’t know about you but I hate putting oil on my eyes. It blurs my vision and ends up smearing my makeup all over my face. I quite enjoy this product. It works wonderfully on eyeliners, mascara, and eye shadow. However, I found that it doesn’t remove waterproof mascara at all. The same thing applies to Bioderma which I have tried before. Although many people rave about it and say it removes waterproof makeup like a dream, it doesn’t work on me for some reason :( Nevertheless, I think it’s a wonderful eye makeup remover and leaves your eyes fresh and clean. Of course, as the “sensitive skin expert”, it does not irritate my eyes at all. I even tried to use this to remove my face makeup, and it works pretty well!

Next, I tried their cleansing facial wipes. Since I quite enjoyed their eye makeup remover, I had high expectation of this product. Unfortunately, it disappointed me. I don’t know if it’s just my wipes but they don’t have much moisture in them. When I tried to use it on my face, it ended up dragging my skin because it’s so dry. Only until the last sheet did it work a little bit better.  Again, the whole claim about it removes waterproof makeup is not true. Since the wipes are so dry, I wouldn’t even try to use them on my lashes, I don’t want the wipe to pull off all of my lashes. No thanks! So overall, the facial wipes ended up being a disaster.

Lastly, I tried Simple’s Refreshing Facial Wash Gel. I usually don’t expect too much from face wash. As long as it doesn’t irritate my skin and leave my skin feeling fresh and clean, I am fine. So this face wash is pretty good. Although I am not completely amazed by it, by no means do I hate it. I would use this up but I would still purchase the Shiseido foaming face wash. That product is amazing! You can read my review HERE. If you are looking for something gentle on your skin, I would recommend the simple one as it’s easier to get hold of than the Shiseido one. However, there is one downside to the product- the scent! It smells like detergent without the nice lemon scent. Can you imagine that? Yeah, quite dreadful indeed. If you are not picky with scent, and since the scent of this gel doesn’t linger on your face, then you’re fine.

Overall, I would give Simple products 3.5 out of 5. I really enjoyed their eye makeup remover and face wash. As for the wipes, it could be just this particular package that’s kind of dried out so I don’t blame them completely.  One thing I found quite ironic about Simple products is that the wipes contain paraben.  Although I have not done thorough research on that ingredient, I am sure that it’s not the best for sensitive skin. So if you considering getting some simple products, I would suggest you to stay away from the wipes. Other than that, it’s all good!
Have you ever tried any Simple products? What do you think?

OPI I'm Not Really A Waitress Swatch and Review

with flash

Hi dolls :) Today’s such a wonderful day for me. As you might know, I am currently in grade 12 so university is my top one concern. This morning, I just received an e-mail from University of Western Ontario that I got accepted into the program that I applied there. Yay!! I’ve been worried about university acceptance for a while and the western program is my top choice. Finally!! :D

Anyhow, I just want to share with you the joyful news and let’s move on to today’s post. I would like to review another polish from The Top Ten nails polish set by OPI. Some might think rich red polish granny and boring, but I think they’re just so classic and they make your nails look super nice and polished. Here I have I’m Not Really a Waitress. An odd name indeed. It’s a gorgeous polish nevertheless.

without flash

This is a deep red polish with tiny gold shimmer in it. The shimmer is really subtle and provides more dimensions to your nails. The polish applies beautifully. It’s not streaky or sheer. You only need one coat to reach opacity. I never have the patience to wait for my nails to dry and paint 5 coats, one after another. So this is perfect for me. Plus, unlike cream polish, I think shimmery polishes are really forgiving. If you mess up, you can just paint another coat on top. No biggies.

So yes, here’s my review and swatches OPI I’m Not Really a Waitress. What do you think? Is deep red polish your thing? Comment down below and let me know!

I'm nominated for Liebster Award!!

Guess what guys, lavenderfedora is nominated for the Liebster Award! I’m beyond thrilled when Katherine from Hot Child in Chi City contacted me and told me I was nominated. Although I have never heard of the award before, I learnt that Liebster means dearest, sweetheart etc in German. The blogger nominated by the award is to answer 11 questions and pass the award on to another 11 bloggers. Also, I need to create 11 questions to ask them as well. So here goes the questions Katherine asked me.
1)      Why did you start blogging?
I’ve always been passionate about beauty and fashion related things. I’ve never shared with you about this but I actually made YouTube videos for a while back in 2010. It didn’t turn out so well so I closed down the channel. However, the desire of wanting to share my styles, makeup tips etc with others have always been with me so instead of YouTube, I decided to open up a blog. It’s a lot less intimidating than talking in front of a camera in my opinion. :)
2)      What is your favorite thing to blog about?
I love to blog about anything fashion and beauty related, to be honest. If I really have to pick a favorite, I would probably choose DIY tutorials. I love DIYs and creating new things. It gives me so much joy that I am able to share with others how to create unique and beautiful things as well.
3)      What is your favorite movie/film?
This might be a tricky question for some people but for me, I’ve always had a favorite movie in mind. For the longest time, I am obsessed with this movie called SILK. It’s such a sad yet beautiful movie, my heart was touched by it whenever I watched this. Recently, I’ve watched the latest version of Jane Eyre and I was in love with it right away. So my favorite movies would be Silk and Jane Eyre.
4)      What is your favorite item of clothing you have?
This is actually hard. I don’t have one specific clothing item that I’m really attached to. But for now, I have been really obsessed with my pleather jeans from H&M. Lana Del Rey wore them in the ads too!
5)      What can you never leave home without?
I can’t leave my home without my glasses. Lol this is so lame but it’s true. I am very nearsighted but I hate to wear glasses. I’ve been begging my parent to get me a pair of contacts for the longest time with no luck. So I choose to bring them with me and put them on only when necessary. This can be extremely inconvenient sometime when I forget to bring them with me and I am literally half-blind.
6)      What's your favorite city?
Paris!! I’ve never been there but it’s my dream to visit there. I love Eiffel Tower and there are so many beautiful fashion houses in Paris. It’s just such a romantic city.
7)      What is something that not many people know?
Well, not many of my friends know about my blog actually. I’ve kinda kept it as a secret because the last time I shared with my friends about my YouTube channel, let’s just say they were the reason I closed it down. And for now, my blog has not been very popular I guess, so lavenderfedora is something not many people know about. Please spread the love for me <3
8)      Where do you find inspiration?
This is a really broad question. But I will have to say I feel the most inspired when I come back from shopping. It’s really strange but every time I come home from shopping, my brain is full of ideas and design that I want to create.
9)      What is your dream vacation?
I would love to go to Paris and Provence. If you don’t know where Provence is, it is a region of southeastern France on the Mediterranean adjacent to Italy. The reason I want to go there so badly is because there are so many lavender fields in Provence. It shouldn’t be a surprise to you that I am obsessed with lavender hence my blog name. :P
10)  What is your favorite accessory you own?
I am not extremely into accessory but if I really have to pick one, I have this turquoise ring that I got from Quebec City and I wear them all the time.
11)  Describe yourself in five words.
Shy, creative, studious (a nicer word for nerdy :P), persistent (another nice word for stubborn), artistic.

Now let me pass on the award onto 11 other bloggers. The blogs that I choose to nominate are:

And my questions are:
1)      Why did you choose this name for your blog?
2)      What do you enjoy the most from blogging?
3)      How would you describe your style?
4)      If money is not a problem, and you have only one store to buy all your clothes and accessories, where would it be?
5)      Whose wardrobe would you like to swap with?
6)      What is your favorite memory from your blogging journey?
7)      What, or who is your current obsession?
8)      What's the top item on your wish list right now?
9)      What would you like to be (career wise) if you don’t have to worry about anything financially?
10)  What’s the weirdest thing about you?
11)  What is your favorite quote?

I hope those questions make sense :P I’m not the best at coming up with questions.
I would like to thank Katherine again for nominating me for this award and please share my blog with your friends. :)

DIY: Cute Polka Dot Storage Tin

Have I told you how much I love DIYs? Well, I certainly do! I am always eager to learn new techniques and ways to make your own masterpiece. I am especially interested in upcycling. There’s nothing better than changing trash into treasure!

I am sure you all have some sort of cookie tins or random empty containers laying around in your house. Even if not, I still hope you can be inspired by this post and start on the journey of DIYs. This upcycle is really simple. All you need is an empty container that you wish to revamp, paper (any color of your choice, preferably thick ones), some decorative pieces such as nicely-designed papers, rhinestones, ribbons etc. Let’s get started!

First, make sure your container is nicely cleaned. You can pour some robbing alcohol onto a cotton pad and give your container a nice bath. Then, let your creative mind take over and do whatever you want with it really. I cut out circles of equal size out of scrap paper, and arrange them arrange them diagonally. Since they are just paper, you can use whatever glue you want. I believe I just used some double-sided tape. Combining two different ribbons, I made a pretty bow out of them. By the way, I have an obsession with ribbons. I have been collecting them from gift wraps, cakes packaging ever since I was in kindergarten LOL There’s nothing cuter than polka dots and bows, in my opinion.

I am pretty picky with my design, so I was not satisfied with this upcycle yet. Since I had some textured wallpaper left from  a huge makeover that I gave my bedroom the previous summer, I put that all over the inside of the container. Many of you might find this unnecessary, but I like to beautify things inside and out. I really think the lining adds a interesting touch to the box and voila, your very own cute container is completed.

There are so many things you can do with this tin. You can simply design it to fit your own room decor so it would be a nice touch to your room. Or like me, you have way too many nails polishes or makeup items that you need to store, go ahead and put them in here. The possibilities are endless and I hope you enjoy this short and simple DIY.
Let me know if you try this out. If you do, don’t forget to send me a photo to my twitter @Yolennie1
